LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

There was a good attendance of j members at the April meeting of the Melrose-Houghtpn Valley branch of the League of Mothers, held in the Melrose Hall, when Mrs. Mexted presided. ■ ■', Greatly admired ,was the tablecloth given by Mrs. Mexted, embroidered with the league badge in gold by Mrs. Blenkinsop. A very interesting and appreciated address on Katherine Mansfield was given by Mrs. Edie, who proved to be fully conversant with her subject, and her reading of several extracts, prose, and verse, was full of expression and feeling. "Katherine Mansfield's path through life was not. an easy one," said Mrs. Ediej "but she had;an immense capacity for joy, as well "as sorrow, and an irftense love- of all that was simple, true, and beautiful. She was convinced that we come by knowledge and love through pain, arid welcomed all experience. ; New Zealanders should be proud; of. Katherine Mansfield and her contribution to New Zealand literature." .■;; •■" : . Two recitations.;were given by Mrs.: C. Huxford and a very amusing oneact play was.-read by the.;• L-.W.C.A. Junior Women's ■'.= Club,: play-reading circle. • Hearty votes of thanks to tne speaker and entertainer were carried with acclamation. Afternoon tea was served. TALK ON NATIVE BIRDS A meeting- -of the Wainui-o-mata Women's Institute was held recently, Mrs. Heathcote presiding. She introduced Mrs. Dv Pont, who gave a most interesting talk on native birds, stressing the point that it was everyone's! duty to protect the native bush, thuM by helping to encourage bird lifef^W hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Dv Pont, the president presenting her with a bouquet. The competition for a jar of jelly was won by Mrs. Heathcote, with Mrs. L Wood second. The competition for May is to be a red, white, and blue novelty, not costing more than two shillings. A dainty... afternoon .tea was.served, by the hostesses, Mesdames Vaney, Calli= anfl l\?Tiss Callis.
