THINK FIRST
FARMING MATTERS
PRESIDENT'S ADVICE
The adoption by members of the union of the policy of thinking and weighing their words before making j definite public statements was advocated by the Dominion president, Mr. W. W. Mulholland, when speaking to a meeting of the Makara-Hutt Valley j section of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. As a Farmers' Union, said Mr. Mulholland, they were at the present time facing tho most difficult problems which they had ever had to face in their career, and the history of their organisation was not devoid of a great many critical times. At present, however, things were in a stale of flux. New policies were succeeding one another in such rapid succession that before one had fully grasped the policy of yesterday, it was gone, and they were facing a new policy of today. Consequently those who were charged with the responsibility of looking after the farmers' '. interests found themselves continually faced with new problems of the very greatest moment —problems with far-reach-ing consequences and which they could not fully foresee, and which required them to make their decisions almost on the moment.
Individual members and leaders in the Farmers' Union had to give serious consideration to all that they said and did. He had found throughout New Zealand that those of their members who were occupying responsible positions were fully living up to their responsibilities. This spoke volumes for the quality of their men who were now taking part in the government of their organisation.
Today they were attracting the best brains among the farmers, and not only were they the best men in tlie farming, community, but they were doing all that they could to fill the bill, and in this they were very ably supported by the Women's Division. As Dominion president he appreciated the work members wi?re doing.
