BIG FIRE IN SYDNEY
£100,000 DAMAGE
BLAZE FOLLOWS EXPLOSIONS
(Received April 28, 11.45 a.m.)
SYDNEY, This Day.
A five-storey building, occupied by Grimley, Limited, in the Broadway City, was destroyed by fire early this morning. The damage is estimated at £100,000. Three shops in front of the building were also razed.
The fire was heralded by a series of terrific explosions, and. the flames spread among the inflammable stock, which included paints and spirits, with amazing rapidity. Every brigade in the city area attended, and only the strenuous efforts of the firemen prevented the flames spreading to other buildings in the block, which included Grace Bros.' huge emporium.
Eight families in homes at the rear of Grimley's building raced for their lives when the flames threatened to ignite their houses.
