GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI
(Special -to the "Evening Post.")
PALMEKSTON N., This Day. The conditions were most unpleasant for track work at Awapurii yesterday. Some of the horses with engagements at the Dannevirke Meeting were required to gallop during heavy rain, and the course became more holding as the morning advanced. The course proper, with the flags about fifteen feet ouV was open for fast work, and the going was heavy. ■ . .. Aria, the Hunting Song-Paonui filly who is accepted for the Maiden Stakes on Friday, with S. Anderson up, Irorn a barrier start, sprinted two furlongs in 25 l-ssec, moving well after giving a bit of trouble behind the tapes. . : Cloudy Bay (Anderson) sprinted half a mile in 52 2-ssec after being clocked to run the first furlong in 14 (D. Mansfield) and Tidewaiter (G. Tattersall) were companions over five furlongs The former got the better of the start, but Tidewaiter gradually closed the gap and was doing better, than Stargono at the finish. The last half-mile took them 53sec and Tidewaiter's effort was anattractive one. . , Riotous (W. J. McDowell) jumped the brush fences . and then did even time over six furlongs on the course proper. Riotous looks well. Bluffer, after a fast first furlong, completed, a four-furlong flutter in Taumau (P. Rae) and Petrarch (An- ( derson) were galloped a mile and they were together for most or the way.^ Their sectional- times were: First three. 42 l-ssec; half a mile, 55 2-ssec; five, lmin 9 3-ssec; and the full distance, with Taumau half a length to the good., at the post, was lmin 52sec. ■ ' Forest Glow, with a-light boy up, and looking bright.and keen to work, was,galloped a mile and a quarter.
