COLLEGIATE OLD BOYS' BALL

(From "The Post's" Representative.) WANGANUI, March 29.

Although much smaller than usual, due to many fearing to attend functions on account of the "infantile" trouble the annual Easter ball held at "Big School" by the Collegiate School Old Boys' Association on Monday night was a brilliant affair, with visitors from all parts of the North Island.

This year an effective scheme of decorating, in which the school colours played a prominent part, made the hall most attractive. The supper-room was very gay with great bowls of blue and gold flowers, and orange candles twinkling in handsome Tudor candlesticks.

Mesdames D. Earle, E. Roddy, and H. E. Newton were responsible for the supper and decorations, and the general committee comprised Messrs. H. Goss (secretary), G. Burgess, K. and R. Handley, E. H. Bernau, E. P. Richardson, M. Bourne, L. Donovan, L. Talboys, J. McFarlane, H. H. Keesing, G. Pownall, Pleasants, J. Turner, and

Mr. F. W. Gilligan, headmaster of the school, and Mrs. Gilligan (wearing black blistered cloque sprinkled with crystals) received the guests, among whom'were Mr. W. Cunnigham, Wellington, president of the Collegiate School Old Boys' Association, and Mrs. Cunningham (wearing .powder blue lace).

There were six debutantes—Miss Kathleen Barton, in white taffeta; Elizabeth Nairn (Hawke's Bay), pale blue shot taffeta; B. Fitzherbert (Taihape), pink.lace;. M. Smith (Taihape), French ivory satin and hand-embroid-ered tulle; B. Stuart-King, white tafefta and lace; Lyndsay Barstow, white tailored tree-bark poult.

Collegiate School Sports. • The weather for the Collegiate School's annual sports remained fine. Owing to the absence of Hawke's Bayvisitors due to the outbreak of infantile paralysis in that district, the attendance was much smaller than in previous years. At the close of the afternoon, the headmaster, Mr. F. W. Gilligan, spoke briefly, and the trophies were presented to the .winners. No records were broken, but the high jump record, under 17, was equalled by Jacobsen (4ft 11 Jin). The senior championship was won by Gyllies with 16J points, Meuli second with 8J points, and Riddell third with 6 points. The junior championship was won by Waite with. 16 points, and Henderson and N. J. C. Stewart were second equal with 6 points each. Projected New College. For many years a large area of ground at Wanganui East has been set aside by the Wanganui Girls' College Board- of Governors as the site for a new college. At a recent meeting of the bdard.the principal (Miss Tizard) reported that the attendance had increased to such an extent that the boardting accommodation had become a projblem that would require consideration. It was decided to invite the Minister cjf ■ Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) to visit Wanganui-as soon as possible and !see for himself the need for providing better facilities for the college. Extensive Croquet. Nine croquet clubs competed for the , Wamganui Croquet Association's Shield in (the inter-club doubles. The final tal^jy showed that the first four clubs were very close, only eleven points]

separating them. St. James won the shield with 248 points, followed by Wanganui 245, Wanganui East 243, and Durie Hill 237 points. Many Parties. Mrs. J. B. Baird, who will leave shortly for a trip to England and Canada, was the guest of honour recently at still another party, when Mr. and Mrs. G. K. Selfe gave a "5 o'clock" party for her. Among the guests were Dr. J. B. Baird, Mr. and. Mrs. G. H. Haldane, Mr. and Mrs. E. "Kirk, Mr. and Mrs L. Gilberd, Mr and Mrs E. Marks, and Misses Little' and Pascoe. I
