THE GARDEN IN APRIL

AMONG THE FLOWERS

Throughout the month of April continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs, anemonies, and ranunculus. Carnations raised from cuttings or layers should be ready for lifting and replanting. Be sure to plant firmly and not too deep. If the ground is at all low-lying and liable to become waterlogged in the winter it is advisable to raise the beds six inches or more above the surrounding ' leveli ■ Carnations will not thrive in waterlogged soil. This is a good time to trim evergreen hedges. Done now they will require no further attention till the spring. Preparations' should be made by digging, draining, and manuring the sites for trees and shrubs. The soil requires plenty of time to settle down before the actual planting takes place.
