OIL IN HARBOUR
. One prosecution had to be made during the year for allowing oil to escape into the'harbour, says the annual re,port of the Wellington Harbour Board. The master of the Doric Star was prosecuted and fined £50, pliis costs. The duty is placed upon the board to see that .the harbour is .kept free from pollution'of any kind. In order to ensure that the strigtest precautions are' taken on vessels against the escape of oil into the harbour, continual: vigilance Is necessary and hi?, any serious cases prosecutions must' be instituted. Although the board insists on all 'escaping oil being collected and cleaned upv this cannot always be done effectively,.and the.'residue, apart from.its effect, on fish, and bird life,°adheres to the wharves and sea walls,'and causes discomfort on the beaches.
