The New Zealand United Fire Brigades' biennial competitions commenced this morning in cold, drizzling rain, which later gave way to bright sunshine. The one-man coupling and four-men motor events concluded this afternoon.

The Gilberd Memorial and gold medal for one-man coupling was won by F. H. Steward (Whakatane), who was second in the last competitions.

The four-men motor, which was the first of the new modern events drawn up to cope with fire off a direct line of route, was won by Nelson. Results are as follows: —;
