"MONEY FROM HOME"

STATE PAYING RATES

Questions as to the full intention of the Government regarding the payment of rates on State houses were asked by councillors at the City Council meeting last evening, when advice was received from the Director of Housing (Mr. A. Tyndall) that the Government intended to pay rates on its State houses when those residences were occupied. The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop): That means when the houses are not occupied no rates will be paid? Councillor J. Burns said that the rates would probably be paid from the time the houses were first rented.

Mr. Hislop: If the houses are occupied for half a year,' does it mean that half a year's rates will be paid?

Councillor Burns*. I should say that as soon as the houses are rented the rates will start.

Councillor M. F. Luckie: It's- all money from home as far as we are concerned.
