NO NEW APPOINTMENT

DUTIES BY SUB-COMMITTEE

(Received March'll, 11 a.m.)

CANBERRA, This Day. / Ministers refused to comment on Sir Henry Gullett1 s resignation, saying that they were sworn to secrecy. It is learned authoritatively, however that the trouble arose over Sir Henry Gullett making a recommendation to Cabinet that further efforts to negotiate with Canada for a revised trade treaty be abandoned, and that Cabinet refused to accept the recommendation.

The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, announced that no additional appointment to Cabinet will be made, but that trade treaty negotiations will be carried on by a sub-committee, of which the Attorney-General, Sir Robert Menzies, will be chairman, and the Minister of Commerce, Dr. Earl Page, and the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. W. White, will be the other members.
