PARAMOUNT THEATRE.

"The Masquerader."

A return season of "The Masquerader" will commence at the Paramount Theatre tomorrow. This film is undoubtedly Ronald Colman's crowning achievement. There is a history to the appeal of "The Masquerader." Years ago it was one of the most popular novels ever published, running into hundreds of thousands of copies in America and in England. It became a play in which Guy Bates Post toured the world for six years. Post climaxed his long association with the play by making a picture of it in 1922 and it was a tremendous success. Honald Colman in its dual roles is concerned with the great problems of England today—unemployment, labour troubles, strikes, and financial crises. It combines the thrilling drama of "Bulldog Drummond" with the sparkling romance and comedy of "The Devil to Pay." The story deals with ,t\vo men who so closely resembled each other that one stepped into the fighting political career and love of the other man's wife. • His two roles give Colman an opportunity to contrast drunkenness and sobriety, sanity and fitness, with debauchery and depravity. Unlike "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde" and the other famous dual roles of the stage and screen, "The Masquerader" offers Colman no important help in the way of make-up. Playing with him are Elissa Landi and the dark, stately beauty Juliette Tompson, the one as wife, the other as mistress. Excellent supports complete ..a,. fine-programme.
