THE BRUSH BUSINESS
: Quite ■ apart from the "brushing for beauty" story, have you ever noticed how often brushes make their appearance in our everyday lives? When we awake each morning the hairbrush makes its appearance, but before breakfast, use is found for toothbrushes, shaving brushes, nailbrushes, and shoebrushes, states an exchange. The hatbrush and the clothes-brush help us to present a neat appearance to the world. jAt home, the breakfast table is cleared with the help of the crumb | brush, and the housework begins. Out comes the blacklead brush, the hand brush for sweeping, and the scrubbing brush. The pots are cleaned with the scouring brush and milk and water bottles with a bottle brush. At the office, special brushes keep the typewriters clean. They also turn up in the paste pot and the gum jar. Dentists and doctors use • special medical brushes. All the film stars who stare at you from, the front of the cinema were put there by a bill-poster's brush. Good health depends on the cleanliness of the streets, which are swept by brushes. We should never have known any of the great artists if they had been without their paint brushes. The brush makers—there are more than 10,000 in Britain, belong to one of the oldest trade unions in that country. v j
