PRICE OF GOLD

(Liy Teleftraph—Press. Assn.—Copyright.) (Received March .10, 10 a.m.) LONDON, March 9. The price of fine gold per ounce, 142s 6id. \ ■ -. s. d. March 1 142 3i February 1 \& °j> lanuary 4 141 8 December 1 lil ' ! . DEARER DIAMONDS

The Diamond Corporation is keenly anxious to increase diamond prices this year and is likely to accomplish this before long, states the "Financial News" The present position is that it does not pay to work the Kimberley mines with prices at today s levels, while other mines, like the Premier mine, which- the Government would like to see reopened, are still unpayable The Diamond Corporation hopes to market £8,000,000 worth of stones this year, of which South Africa's share would be £5,500,000. However, there are many who, firmly believing that diamond sales are likely to be considerably higher than the above estimates, place South Africa's quota at around £7,000,000 worth "of stones, with corresponding benefits all round. When visible stocks of stones become denleted, it is bbvious that to enable the bigger ' mines to re-enter production an enhanced selling price is necessary.
