NEW YORK, March 9.
The "New York Times," in a leader drawing a parallel between the Australian referendum and the United States constitutional crisis, comments that the referendum very clearly shows in at least one democracy where voters had a direct chance to express an opinion they refused to vote for extensions of Federal power. It was not the Supreme Court of Australia or a mere group of "defeatist lawyers," but the people themselves who prevented the Federal Government increasing its control, the paper says.
