Joy was brought overnight, to the homes of a Birmingham chemist, Ronald White, a.gcd 31, and a Warwickshire boy, aged 13, Bernard Jones, when they returned safe and well. They disappeared on Boxing Day at Ilfracombe, where their car was found deserted on the pier. It was feared lhat they had perished in climbing the cliff.' White explains that they were cut oft by the tide while walking on" the beach. They found a dinghy and tried to row to the pier. They we're swept out to sea, became exhausted, and were picked up by a freighter bound for Buenos Aires. Transhipment was impossible, so they were carried on to South America. They lived at odd jobs ashore till they were able to work their passage home.
