Bazaine was at a surprisingly payable return for the only recent form horse in the Handicap Hurdles. The others were no: match whatever for him, and after steadily widening his margin-he was being eased up before the post to score by eight lengths. Bazaine has been improving with every race he has had recently, and this was his second win on end, as he also succeeded a week earlier at Opunake. He is still a little inclined to run down his fences, but he generally appears safe. The only fault he made on Saturday was at the second last fence, which was half down as a result of Trevelyn Hold's crashing into it the first time. He now races in the colours of Mr. G. M. Bennett, of Palmerston North, who holds him on lease from his breeder (Mr. F. Ormond), and he is being trained at New Plymouth by H. Dulieu. Forest Glow was comfortably best of the others, and he is likely to go on steadily improving, for he is a more solid customer to start off steeplechasing this year than he was last. He jumped very straight and true, except that he chanced the same half-fallen obstacle as the winner did. Invictus tried to go with Forest Glow, but was outpaced by the steeplechaser. Otauru King, unexpectedly better backed than the winner, ran ungenerously; but Padnos, finishing on in fourth place, made a promising showIng first time out in the role. Tribesman may do better with experience. Trevelyn Hold crashed at the first fence, and his 'trainer-rider, W. N. Taylor, was removed in the ambulance suffering from slight concussion.
