SQUALLY WINDS

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong squally northwest winds, later backing temporarily to the west or south-west. - Weather for the most part fair to cloudy. The general forecast-for the Dominion is for south-westerly winds in the southern portion of the South Island, elsewhere north-westerlies prevailing, but later backing temporarily to the south-west, force moderate to strong generally, and at times reaching gale force in exposed places about and south of Cook Strait. Weather unsettled in districts with a westerly aspect from Kawhia southwards, and in the southern portion of the South Island, with rain at time's. Mainly ( fair to fine in eastern districts. \ With a cyclone extending from the Tasman Sea and north of New Zealand, a series of westerly depressions continues to pass in the south. Northwest winds have therefore. prevailed south of New Plymouth and East Cape, and have been strong, in the Cook and Foveaux Straits. areas, but otherwise light to moderate. Over most of the Auckland Province southerly breezes have continued to rule. During yesterday the weather was fine and pleasant generally, and similar conditions are still in evidence this morning, in most districts, but since last night it has become somewhat unsettled in the west and far south portions of the South Island, with rain in places. Auckland has had fair to fine and warm weather with a light southerly wind. . Fine, pleasant conditions have prevailed in Wellington. The winds have been north-west and since last night they have increased in force. Sunshine yesterday amounted to twelve hours. Christchurch had fine clear weather yesterday with a fresh north-easterly wind. It was warm this morning and cloudy, the wind being a light northwesterly.

In Dunedin it was also fine though cloudy at times, a light north-east wind prevailing. At 9 a.m. today the wind was north-west and the weather still fair.
