EXHIBITION SITE
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l read with interest Councillor L'en McKenzie's suggestion that the Centennial Exhibition be. held on the Town Belt fronting Russell Terrace and Leraud Street- This location possesses advantages over any other site that has been suggested that are apparent to the casual observer. The contour and aspect of the land are ideal for Wellington conditions and access from all sides is easily obtained. The Town Belt was originally set aside for the recreation of Wellington's citizens and doubtless some of the improvements made for. an exhibition on this site would remain as an asset and enable the land to-be ultimately used for its proper purpose instead of for grazing cows, as it is at present. In any case it would be far better policy to improve the Town Belt than'to erect buildings for an Exhibition on the railway land at Thorndon with the full knowledge that all improvements will have to be demolished at the end of 1940.
. The area available at Leraud Street has, in my opinion, been underestimated, as there would be at least 60 acres of usable land if Wakefield Park is included. This is nearly twice the area available .at Thorndon end the amenities are infinitely superior. From the point of view of access by the majority of people the suggested site is admirable because it is nearer the geographical centre of population than Thorndon. The main factor is that of actual area and this is s amply catered for on the proposed site, whereas previously •. suggested sites have all been On the small side. —I am, etc.,. ■ ■ ■
