ACCIDENT ON SHIP
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST
Evidence regarding an accident- in the hold of the Durham on Wednesday last was given at an inquest into the death of Gordon Manning, labourer, aged 24, opened by the Coroner (Mr. E. Gilbertson) yesterday afternoon." Manning was struck by a beam and died next day in hospital.
The chief officer of the Durham, Frederick Thomas Renny, said that he inspected the hatches of the ship about 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday, and saw that the hatch beams were properly secured, with a bolt through the end of/each beam.-, Between 3.30 and" 3.4.5, he heard the sound of a crash'and.found that the forward'beam and two sections of the hatch covering had fallen into the hold. He found a bolt oil the starboard side hanging out of thebeam slit,. and distorted as a result' of the strain when the beam was wrenched out of position. He went down into the hold' and found the deceased conscious, but in evident pain. He was properly cared for and taken to hospital. Witness returned to the main deck, but could not find the port-side bolt.
Dr. P. Lynch said that death was due to shock and hemorrhage from a severe crush to the lower spine arid pelvis. ; ' : The inquest was adjourned until 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday next.
