(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
ROTORUA, This Day.
A love affair between a young Maori college boy, Frederick Oneroa, aged 16, and a Madri girl, Queenie Katene, aged 17, both of Horohoro, near Rotorua, ended- tragically yesterday when Oneroa committed suicide by-shooting himself through the heart with a singlebarrel shotgun. !
At*an inquest the evidence showed that the boy had become very depressed when the parents of the girl refused\to consent to the young couple's marriage. About 7 o'clock yesterday morffihg Oneroa took his father's gun while the latter was in the milking shed, arid when a Maori woman tried to stop him the boy punched her severely in the face. The father made a search for the youth but was too late to prevent a tragedy, the boy being found lying on his back with the gun beside him.
The Coroner, Mr. W. L. Richards, returned a verdict that Oneroa died from a gunshot wound self-inflicted.
