MOTHERS', HELPERS MEET

Mrs.' G. W.^Guthrie was elected president for the' year of the 'Mothers' Helpers'*, at the annual meeting yesterday. Mrs. Winton Brown was chosen as a vice-president and- Mesdames B. S. Lyon and J. H. Martin were added to the committee. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring president (Mrs. Marshall Macdonald), and to the secretary (Miss Sutton). - It was also decided to send a message of sympathy to Mrs. A. ,D. Bayfeild, on account of her protracted indisposition, reference being made to the fact that she had been a member of the committee since its inception eighteen years ago. .

Votes >of cordial thanks were passed to the hon. auditors (Messrs. Clarke Menzies, and Griffin), to the hon.-solici-tor (Mr. Winton Brown); to the Press, and to all who had helped the society in its work in any way .^ -, The annual report presented stated:—"This is the 18th year of the

society's work: and it still continues to more than' justify its existence. Having come through the.depression, the committee recently engaged an extra helper and should the demand continue as at present" 'there will certainly be cause to increase the •. staff. During the j year 183 families have been helped, many for lengthy periods on account of extenuating circumstances. Of these visits 259 were given free and .563 were paid for at half rates or lower. ' The sum of £204 2s 6d was written off for free and reduced'help.

"It will be seen that money is required to-meet deficiencies. • ■ In this connection, the committee ■is grateful for donations received from :the T. G. Macarthy and D. G. Brown Trusts, the Rotary Club, Lady Myers, Lady Shirtcliffei. Mesdames D. H. S. Riddiford, C. M.- Turrell, H. Hall, C. G. Richardson, L. • 0.. H. -Tripp, J. McParland,- R. L. "The staff still continues to earn unstinted praise for, their work. Therefore it gave'pleasure to the committee to restore to the long -service; workers the cut in salary they had been compelled to make. The new- helpers, Misses Thelma Briggs and Ina Mackenzie, are proving an asset to the-society and join with the others in doing good work." .■••■■-■■•'■■■■■
