Marie Alphonsine has shirred effects in felt, or velvet- for ; toques, and also combines black Persian lamb with velvet in luminous shades, lily emerald green and fuchsia. One model has a bow of velvet ribbons.

Humour is rarely associated with fashion, but the new prints in black and white might well be the work, of a cartoon artist. Haughty senoritas spurn the advances of pleading caballeros, and tiny white figures bounce about,in energetic games of tennis on black crepe backgrounds.

Periodically the old-world town of Roscoff, on the rocky shores: of Finis-: terre, Brittany, becomes a town of old men, women, and children. Onions remove practically its entire able-bodied population to England. Roscoff.is the home town of the "French onion boy," who, with ropes of onions slung around his neck, is a familiar sight at English kitchen, doors'; during the autumn.
