RIFLE SHOOTING

NATIONAL MEETING

Arrangements for the annual championship meeting of the National Rifle Association of New Zealand, which is to open on the Trentham ranges on Friday, are now complete and a successful meeting is certain if weather conditions are favourable. There has been a" steady increase in the activities of rifle clubs since the depression and an improvement in entries is anticipated this year. Many of the competitors will reach Trentham on Thursday, when they will have ■an ' opportunity of testing their rifles from 300 to 900 yards. A number will probably reside in camp during. the meeting, which lasts until the following Wednesday, and arrangements have been made for billeting and mess. In addition,- the usual canteen arrangements are to be made.

There will be 850 cash .prizes; aggregating £1067, for the various events, and there are also ten gold and silver medals, nine miniature silver. cups, and twenty miniaturo oak shields. The winner of the principal event—the King's Match—will receive £30, a gold medal, and a shield, and the twenty highest aggregate scorers in the King's Grand Final will each receive a miniature oak shield. . . '

All matches at. 300, 500, and 600 yards will.be.fired on the Collins and Somerville ranges," and the matches at 800 and 900 yards will be fired on the Seddon and Somerville ranges. At 300 yards the aiming mark is increased to 14 inches, and at 500 and 600 yards it has been increased to 28 inches. The bull's-eye at 800 and 900 yards has been reduced from 36 to 30 inches. The 1932 cordite ammunition will be issued free to competitors, and reductions in train and boat fares have been arranged to-encourage riflemen to attend the meeting.
