"AT HOME"

As a conclusion to the week of entertainments given in connection with the British Medical Association Conference, the New Zealand president, Dr. T. D. M. Stout and Mrs. Stout, gave a ball in St. Francis Hall last night. Although there were such a large number of guests the hall is so spacious that it was not overcrowded and there was room to dance quite- comfortably.

After passing through the entrance foyer and :up the stairway where bunting, cypresses, native wattle, and greenery made a welcoming display, the guests were greeted at the entrance to the ballroom by their host and hostess. Mrs. Stout was wearing a powder blue chiffon frock. It was made with the skirt very fully flared from the hips and with a cascading flared frill from the' neck to the hemline in front. The bodice was tied in a large bow at the back on the nape of the neck. .Many . particularly-attractive frocks were worn and they were shown to advantage-, in the gaily-decorated hall. All around the walls and the balcony were hanging flags and bunting, and the stage, where the orchestra was seated, was a.mass of ..greenery. Above the dance floor clusters of-multi-coloured balloons were'suspended, and attractively-shaded lights ■' shed 'a; soft radiance on the scene. . Upstairs in "the lounge, behind the balcony,'fruit cup was served, .arid supper 'was set in'the large room below, the long' jables being ' charmingly decorated, with gilded baskets filled with zinnias and small gladioli ranging from fed to the palest yellow. .---.. ..'■..•'■■ : ■';■■■;.'.". , ■;•■.;..

It was one of the most successful private functions that has taken place in Wellington for some time, and a splendid beginning for the coming dancing season. There was one debutante, Miss Patsy Ashbolt, who wore a deep pearltinted satin frock and carried a bouquet of cream and yellow rosebuds.
