DEFICIT'S VICTOR

WHIRLING IS TOP CLASS

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, February 24. The two performances of Whirling at the Waikato Meeting stamped him as one of the most improved sprinters in the Dominion. He scored a rather comfortable win on the opening day, and then on Monday, up to 8.4, he had only one horse behind him three furlongs from home. Even at the distance, he never looked likely to' bridge the gap of four lengths between him arid the pacemaker, Deficit, but a hundred yajrds from the post he got to work in real earnest and he gathered in'the leader in remarkable fashion. It was an effort of real merit; Whirling is one of the biggest horses in the north, his conformation being different to that of the biggest, which is probably Triune, for the latter is an angular horse, whereas the dual Te Rapa winner is an appealing sort. On Monday's showing he would go close to winning any sprint event in the Dominion. Whirling is- by the Galloper Light horse Whirlwind (sire of Mazir) from the English-bred mare Legality, by Noblesse Oblige from Permissible, by Myram from the Isinglass mare Perishable. Legality foaled a colt in 1929, this being Bambury (son of Scherzo), one of the fastest horses ' seen in the province of recent years and only recently sent to the stud. Legality was imported by the Auckland Stud Company and on the disbandment of that stud Mr. R. T. Reid secured the mare. Whirling was the first horse he bred from Legality, and two years later came Queen's Council, who met an untimely end last year after showing undoubted promise. In the meantime the English mare has been on a visit to Heroic. Bambury used to win his races by sheer speed from barrier to judge, but with Whirling he seems to race the reverse way, coming from the . back. He is much more solidly framed than his half-brother, which may account for his inability to get into top gear with the real speedsters. The sprint form at Waikato was consistent enough to satisfy the most carping critic of the sport. On the first day Whirling won from Deficit, Golden Sheila. King Rey, and Round Up; and with Golden Sheila and King Rey out of the race on Monday the result was the same—Whirling, Deficit, and Round Up. On this occasion Deficit hit out so well in establishing a four or five lengths' lead at the turn that defeat seemed impossible. Yet Whirling's finish was too solid. Deficit is in rare fettle and will again be hard to defeat next time out. Failures in the short races last weekend were Mata Han, who apparently does best on easy tracks, Clessamor, Mungacre, Impasto, Prince Acre, and Gold Mission, the last-named also preferring easy going. Golden Sheila may be all the better for her outing the first day and may still be a possibility on her home track next weekend.
