BRISK BIDDING

DEMAND FOR WOOL

SECOND AUCKLAND SALE

(By Telegraph—l'ress Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The second Auckland wool sale commenced at 8 o'clock this morning. The offering exceeds 20,000 bales, there is a representative bench of buyers, and bidding was brisk from the outset and appeared to be general, with no slackness in any class of wool. The Japanese were securing a good share of the finer wools but the remainder of the buying seemed to be well distributed. In the first catalogue, comprising 418 lots, the top price was secured for fourteen bales of Southdown at 21d. In the second catalogue the top price was 221 d for Waiheke halfbred. The fourth catalogue peak was 24d, which was reached for halfbred wool from Ponui Island. It is now estimated that prices were on a par with the Wanganui sale, and one penny better than the November sale at Auckland. The sale will probably net over £500,000. Supers and crossbreds sold to 18d; coarse and medium, to 17Jd; lambs, to 18|d; bellies, lid to 12£ d; pieces, 12d to 15d; crutchings, lid to 16d. While securing only a comparatively small proportion of the total offering, the influence of buyers for Dominion industries was a potent factor in keeping prices at a Jiigh level for fine wools. Representatives of New Zealand woollen mills not only secured the highest-priced lines, but were strongly in the market for all fine wool. For the coarser types, suitable for carpet-making, etc., the Americans were prominent, as on this class no duty is payable in the United States; but for these there was also keen competition by local manufacturers.
