WELLINGTON RACES

SIXTEEN THOUSAND

TREASURY'S BIG SHARE

TRENTHAM STATISTICS

("By Rangatira.")

The increase of.over £70,000 in the investments at the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting last week was beyond the most optimistic estimate of the club's stewards, and naturally it has assured the most successful meeting that has been held at Trentham for many years. The club's policy of making a big increase in stakes for the meeting has thus been amply rewarded, for not only was the turnover up 60 per cent, on last year, but the gates and other privileges also benefited in the general improvement.

The meeting was favoured with extraordinarily good weather, considering how tardy summer has been in making its presence felt this year, and this of course was a very helpful factor in attracting the large attendances on all three days. The horses that competed were also the best in class and numbers for six or seven years.

How the investments have improved this year can best be shown by a comparative table, and the following lists give the investments for the Summer Meetings and Anniversary Days since 1926, also the turnover handled in the peak year (1921):— Total Anniversary Summer. Day. | 237,111',i 102.753 1920 ISl?,ll!t'.i 78,20.'! 1P27 185,35" 1 - 78 943'.'. With such an. increase in invest-! ments and under the present scale of taxation payment, the Government enjoys a' greater return from last week's meeting than it has for almost any meeting at Trentham. The following table gives the approximate amount of the taxation (to the £) that has become payable (amusement tax not yet available), with the figures for 1932, 1934, and 1936 given for purpose of comparison:— 1932. 1934. 1936. 1937. £ £ £ £ Tote tax .. 5,760 4,402 4.7H 7,r.,13 Dir. tax'.. 4,515 4,814 5,152 8,2(il Stakes tax .. 314 284 65 93 Totals .. £9,989 £9,500 £9,828 £15,907 The Government's rebate to racing clubs on the totalisator tax is now 1 per cent., which in effect reduces this item from the statutory 5 per cent, to 4 per cent. Until three years ago there was no such rebate, but the totalisator tax up till 1930 was only 2J per cent. When the amusement tax is added the Treasury's portion will be over £16,000. WINNING OWNERS. Forty-seven owners shared in the prize-money, and the win of Ponty in the Wellington Cup, including the £100 trophy, gave the Messrs. E. and N. Rutherford, Parnassus, equal top place, with Mr. C. W. Boyd. Palmerston North, the owner of Martara. Mr. J. P. Herlihy, Dunedin, was next, with Gold Boa's earnings, followed by Mr. W. Higgins, Wellington, with Debham's double success.
