FATAL EXPLOSION

SEVEN MINERS KILLED LONDON, January 21. As the result of an explosion threequarters of a mile underground, seven miners were killed at Markham Colliery, Duckmanton, near Chesterfield. Four were injured, two being in a critical condition. The explosion fortunately occurred during the changing of the day and afternoon shifts when only 35 men were at the bottom of the pit. The fall of the roof was not heavy. A number were entombed and rescued. One man owed his escape to stopping en route to the coal face to eat an orange which his wife gave him.
