IDLE ALONG TEAMS RACE

RULES OF POPULAR NEW CONTEST

Weather conditions being favourable, this weekend will provide for yachtsmen more racing than any other during the season. The annual regatta was set down for yesterday, Anniversary Day, and this afternoon the Inter-Club Cup and the Idle Along championship races were to have been sailed in Evans Bay. Tomorrow's big event will be the Idle Along inter-club teams race, a new contest in Wellington yachting, for which an Auckland firm has donated a cup for annual competition. There is every reason to believe that the contest will prove as highly successful as the Blair Shield event has been in the four years since its inception by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club.

Heretaunga Boating Club. —Idle Along, Elite, Valhalla, and Wairere. i A new course has been fixed, with, the idea of providing a "finishing straight" parallel to the stretch of straight road south-east of Point Jerningham. The boats will start from a line between a buoy and a launch off Little Karaka Bay (just north of Balena Bay) and go to Fraser Rock to a buoy a mile north-east of Jerningham to the Little Karaka Bay buoy twice round, finishing over a line between the buoy and the shore. All buoys are to port. RULES of the contest. The following are the rules of the contest, as officially approved of by the Wellington Association:— 1 General.—This cup, which has been donated to the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association by Messrs. M. K. Millinery and Co is for competition between teams of Idle Alongs, representing clubs which are affiliated to the association. , 2. Boats.—The competition shall be open only to boats of the Idle Along Cl 3 SS Sails.—All boats must carry sail as laid down in the "Idle Along" speci- | fication, gunter or Bermudian rig being optional. 4. Teams.—Each team shall consist I of four boats and no one club may enter more than one team in a contest. 5. Crews—No boat, may carry a crew of more than three or less than two. The skippers and crews of all competing boats must be bona fide members of the club which they are representing. 0. Distinguishing Marks.—Each boat must carry on her mainsail her regular class number, and letter, as allotted by the W.Y. and M.B. Association, and in addition must carry at the masthead. if Bermudian, or peak, if gunter, the burgee of the club she is representing.

contest to be sailed under the latest Y.R.A. rules in force at the time of the contest, and adopted by the assoIf more than four teams should compete, points will be allotted on the same basis as above: namely, 101 foe the first boat and each other place reduced in order from 100 by the quotient of 100 divided by the total number of boats in the race. In the event of a dead heat between two or more boats the poiftts for the places concerned will be added together and divided equally between the two or more boats concerned. In the case of a tie in points between two teams for first place the two teams concerned will sail off over the same course. 9. Course. —The course is to be a triangular one of not less than six nautical miles, to be arranged by the W.Y. and M.B. Association, and to be on neutral waters. Special attention is to be given to arranging the course from the point of view of public interest (so that spectators shall be given the best possible view of the race). If a club outside the limits of Port Nicholson should win the contest, and the following year should desire to hold the contest in their territory, then at the discretion of the association the contest may be held on a neutral course in their waters. 10. Date of Contest.—-The contest shall be an annual one and the date shall be the first Sunday after Anniversary Day, subject to postponement if the Idle Along championship should require to be sailed on this date, and both races are not to be sailed on the one day. But if the contest is to be held outside the limits of Port Nicholson, then a suitable date is to be arranged by the association. 11. Entry for Contest.—Each club dt» sirous of competing for the cup must

submit to the W.Y. and M.B. Association, a written notification of such intention, at least fourteen days before the date arranged for the race, together with the names of the boats, skippers, and crews selected to represent the club in the contest. 12. Notification of Course.—The W.Y. and M.B. Association shall notify the secretary of each competing club in writing of the course, time of start of race, and names of all competing boats, skippers, and crews, and the clubs they represent, at least seven days before the date arranged for the race. 13. Officials.—The W.Y. and M.B. Association shall appoint all necessary officials (judges, starter, timekeeper, and sailing committee) for the conduct of the race; no official so appointed to be a skipper or member of the crew of a competing boat. 14. Alteration to Team.—After nominating their team, no club may change any boat, skipper, or member of crew; without obtaining the consent of ths W.Y. and M.B. Association's officials, 15. Holding of Cup.—The club winning the contest shall be presented with the cup and shall hold it until the next contest, but the cup shall remain the property of the W.Y. and M.B. Association. The club holding the cup shall insure the cup, or otherwise guarantee its replacement or repair in the eveht of loss or damage, In a very critical letter on the selection of Wellington's Flunket Shield I teams, a correspondent, "Cold Facts, suggests that the records of A. McLean, and J. Scott, of the Institute Club, are such as to make them worthy of a place in the representative side. The correspondent points out that to date this season in club cricket McLean has a batting average of 26.4 runs for five visits to the crease and has taken 2*4 wickets at a cost of 9.29 runs per tvicket. Scott's average for seven innings he gives as 39.8, and he contends that the figures show that McLean is an excellent all-rounder and that! Scott is more than an average batsman.
