ASHHURST CUP AGAIN

GRAND JURY'S WIN ' BIG TURNOVER INCREASE (Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. There was some splendid racing at the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club's Annual Meeting yesterday, and a number of the finishes were close and exciting. The weather was fine, but the wind was very little below gale force, making the conditions rather unpleas- j ant. The course was in good order, the attendance very large, and the • totalisator handled £13,689, as compar- i ed with £8885 last year, an increase of £4804. MISS HUSHABYE ALL THE WAY. The hurdles proved a good thing for ■ Miss Husliabye, who was in front alt : the way. With half a mile still to go Miss Hushabye was a bit over a length ahead of Mid Acre and Count Willonyx, and Blue Tiger, under pressure, was a couple of lengths further back. : The leaders were unchanged into the straight where Miss Hushabye was being challenged. At the last fence Blue Tiger went down on his knees, and A. Jenkins went over on to the gelding's face, where he stayed with a head scissors on the favourite, who was blinded. They went on together, and both tipped over the fence alongside the straight. The finish was a good one and Miss Hushabye hung on to beat Mid Acre by a neck. Count Willonyx was three lengths away and Monarchy was fourth. ROYAL SECRET BRILLIANTLY. After a false start in the "Pohangina Handicap the field went away in line, and Lavina was the early leader from Bodyline, Land Tax, and Porotiti. The leaders, with Lavina and Land Tax alternating in front, were the same to the straight, where Royal Secret was second last. As soon as heads were turned for home, Lavina and Notium drew to the front, but Royal Secret, galloping brilliantly and without apparent effort, then came through and soon put the issue beyond doubt, winning easily by over a length from Notium, who was a neck m front ol Lavina. Bodyline finished on into fourth place. MISTER QUEX WINS WELL. Lifeguard was favourite for the Komako Hack Handicap, but after being prominent to the straight he faded out of the picture. Mister Quex was in second place behind Lifeguard as they ran to the straight, and Royal Minstrel, Lady Cheval, and Royal Record were next in order. At the distance Mister Quex was in front and Royal Minstrel, Reipar, and Royal Record were challenging. The_ issue was never in much doubt and Mister Quex won nicely by a couple of lengths from Royal Minstrel, with Reipar, just ahead of Royal Record, another length back. FINE RACE FOR CUP. The race for the Ashhurst Cup was a good one, and Grand Jury scored his second victory in this event when he beat Pango into second place in an exciting finish. Orac led early from Blue Garter, Full Throttle, Round Score, Master Cyklon, and Davistoclc, with Grand Jury last. There was not much alteration during the next halfmile, but the fun started about half a mile from home. There Orac and Blue Garter were leading from Round Score, Pango, Sanguine King, Full Throttle, and Davistock, and Grand Jury and Master Cyklon were moving forward from the rear. There were five horses going for the lead as they raced into the home stretch. At the distance the issue was still in- doubt, but Grand Jury and Pango then drew out, and after a sharp tussle Grand Jury drew away and won well by over a length from Pango. Master Cyklon finished on a length and a quarter away, and Davistock was fourth, with Orac and Sanguine King next. ONE FOR HAWKE'S BAY. Trimden was preferred to the Hast-ings-trained Mahaanui for the Novice Stakes, but Mahaanui won well and Trimden was beaten out of the money. Parakino. Trimden, and Mahaanui were first to break the line, and with half a mile to go Mahaanui and Parakino were setting the pace, followed by Golden Enterprise, Trimden, Ruenzori, and Scooter. Trimden had drifted before they reached the straight. Once into line for the judge Golden Enterprise and Ruenzori challenged Mahaanui, but Mahaanui held them off and won well by a length and a half. Golden Enterprise was second, half a length in front of Ruenzori. Puroto was fourth, followed by Scooter. A "BLANKET" FINISH. The public went for Calshot and Hamarin in the Gorge Hack Cup, but the pair were beaten out of the money after being prominent to the straight. There was a great finish, and Waipiro, Cloudy Bay, and the fast-finishing Red Sand passed the judge almost in line. Waipiro. on the outer, and Cloudy Bay, on the fencc, ran to the front entering the straight, but; they were hard pressed a furlong from home, and the issue was still in doubt when Red Sand came up with a brilliant burst of speed.

BEST OF HIS AGE ON DEEDS THIS SEASON.—Francis Drake reluming to the birdcage after easily winning the Wellington Stakes under full penalty at Trentham on Wednesday. The record of this Chief Ruler colt, who is owned by his breeder, Mr. F. Armstrong, is now five wins and two seconds in seven starts, and he has won £1980 in stakes._

Waipiro finally won by a head from Cloudy Bay, with Red Sand only a neck further away. Lucullus Lad was fourth, and Silver River and Hamarin next. MISTER QUEX'S DOUBLE. Eagle's Eye and Mister Quex were in the boom for the Siberia Hack Handicap, and Mister Quex won well, securing his second victory for the day. The start was a good one, and it was a furlong before the line was definitely broken. Then Eagle's Eye and Tycoon went to the front and Mister Quex was attending them. Something happened to Eagle's Eye as they ran to the straight, and she stopped very quickly, leaving Tycoon in charge. In the run to the judge Mister Quex soon took control, and he went on to win by over a length from Golden Enterprise, who got up to beat Tycoon by the best part of a length. Etiquette was fourth, and All Spirit and Merlyn next. BRAZEN KING SOLIDLY. Brazen King was favourite for the Raumai Handicap, and he duly landed, his finishing run being too solid for Land Tax, who was with Lavina out in front at the distance. Shortly after the start Lavina had taken the lead, and she was followed by Orac, Land Tax, and Brazen King half a mile from home. There was not much change into the straight, where Land Tax tackled Lavina, and they were having a desperate struggle when Brazen King ran past them. Hunting Lodge then arrived on the scene with a late run, and she got to within a heck of Land Tax, who was a couple of lengths from Brazen King at the post. Lavina was fourth and Mustang last.
