FOR SOUTH AFRICA

NEW ZEALAND SHEEP

Following on the export in 1934 of a number of Border Leicester sheep South Africa, a further order was received for a number of ewes and rams with which to form a small select stud of Border Leicester 'ieep. The order was received by the stud stock department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., which was responsible for the previous shipment, and was shipped on account of Colonel E. L. Popham, a prominent breeder of Natal. Colonel Popham, who purchased a number of sheep from the 1934 shipment, when placing his -order stipulated that any animals selected must be high-quality sheep, showing plenty of constitution and character. With these specifications in view, the company's South Island stud stock officer visited many studs in the Otago and Southland districts, where the bulk of the Dominion's Leicester studs are, and finally selected a number of sheep from the well-known flock of Mr. James A. Edwards, of Otikerama, Gore. The consignment, comprising twenty shearling stud ewes, four stud shearling rams, and two special stud rams, was Shipped from Wellington by the Wanganella on Thursday and will be transhipped at Sydney into the Autolycus for the .final stage of the journey to Durban. The twenty ewes forwarded are the pick of Mr. Edwards's last season's drop, and together with the four rams, were selected for their type, constitution, and quality. The two special stud rams, 91/35 and 94/3-5, are handsome, deep-bodied sheep carrying quality fleeces and will doubtless do much to further the reputation of New Zealand Border Leicester sheep overseas. Included in the large shipment of sheep and horses taken by the Wanganella was a stud Romney ram consigned to Launceston, Tasmania. This shearling ram (NB No. 51/35), carrying a particularly nice fleece of wellcrimped, even wool, especially good on the back, was bred at the Wairarapa Training Farm, and has been sold to Mr. R. Grubb, of Cleaveland, Launceston. The selection and shipping arrangements were made through the stud stock department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., on behalf of the breeders.
