MEETINGS ABANDONED

AN EPIDEMIC SAFEGUARD

(By. Telegraph—Presa Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 21. The New Zealand swimming championship meeting; the Maori championships, and the junior and intermediate championships will be abandoned this year because of the epidemic of infantile paralysis. This decision was made at a meeting cf the council of the New Zealand Swimming Association this evening. Because of the abandonment of all championship meetings, the council decided. in order to have a guide for selecting probable representatives for the Empire Games at Sydney in February, 1938, to ask centres to furnish a list of the times of their leading swimmers so that a ranking list could be compiled. The New Zealand championships were to have been held at New Plymouth, commencing on February 6. The junior and intermediate championships at Nelson had been postponed from January 16 till Easter, but will now be abandoned. The Maori championships were to have been held at Rotorua next month.

TARANAKI PROPOSAL

NEW PLYMOUTH, January 21. On receipt of advice of the postponement of the 1937 national swimming championships, to have been held at New Plymouth in February, and a suggestion that the .1938 fixture be heldhere either before or after the visit of the New Zealand team to the Empire Games at Sydney, the Taranaki Swimming Centre tonight decided to recommend that the 1938 championships be held in the first week of January, the dates tentatively selected being January 5, 6, and 8, with the decision of the Annette Kellerman Cup on January 9.
