WELCOME AT AUCKLAND
Auckland is certainly having a ' "feast of reason and flow of soul" at , present, for the citizens having just been favoured by a notable gathering : of scientists are now having the pleasure of meeting representatives of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as well as a number of leading men from New Zealand. The city welcome was given at the Town Hall, which was beautifully decorated, manuka playing a large part in the scheme. The platform had a bank of greenery, with many-tinted hydrangeas, bamboo, ferns, and tall cypress trees, brilliance being given J by tiger lilies and many twinkling j golden lights. Long loops of twisted manuka and baskets of fern were placed around the gallery alternated with golden lights, and groups of bamboo and palms were around the upper part. The high ceiling was flood-lit with vivid green, and above the banked platform there was white floodlighting. The supper tables were artistically arranged with vases of miniature dahlias in tones of pink and deep red, also cream and pink carnations. The central pillars were hidden behind nikau palms, flags, and ferns. There was a number of women doctors present, including Dr. Mary Champtaloup (Sydney), Dr. Elaine Gurr, Dr. Elizabeth Cole, Dr. Augusta Klippel (Australia), Dr. Emma Turkington, and Dr. Gladys Rowley. Sir Carrick and Lady Robertson gave a delightful sherry party at their home, "Rannoch," Epsom, in honour of the visiting surgeons and their wives, a number of the Auckland medical men being also present. The Wellington guests included Lady McGavin, Mrs. Hardwick-Smith, Mrs. Pickerill, Mrs. E. L. Marchant, Mrs. T. D. Stout, Mrs. L D Cohen, Mrs. Hope Robertson, Mrs. Gordon Anderson, Mrs. David Whyte, and Mrs. E. H. Luke.
