CATALANI'S GRANDDAUGHTER
Jeune Star appears to be one of the best two-year-olds in South Australia this season. A fortnight ago this smart galloper carried top weight and won the five' furlongs Hore-Ruthven Handicap in the fast time of lmin ljsec. Jeune Star was bred by Mr. F. A. Tennant, S.A. She is by Stardrift from Catilex, a bay mare bred in New Zealand in 1926. Catilex is by imported Lord Quex from Catalani (sired in England), by Catmint (son of Spearmint) from imported Symbolism. Catalani is now at the West Derby Stud at Ohau, where Defoe is stationed, and her yearling colt by Lord Quex, a full-brother to Catilex, was sold at yesterday's sales for 275 guineas. ' Stardrift, the sire of Jeune Star, was bred in England in 1918 and imported to Victoria by Mr. F. Bullock. He is by Sunstar from Dame d'Or, by Bend Or, so that he comes from the same family as Fairy Gold, dam of Fair Play, sire of Man o' War. Stardrift was imported as a four-year-old.
