BULL IN THE BATHROOM

A bull, which made a perilous excursion through the Mohaka Hotel building and finally was removed with difficulty from a bathroom,, caused some alarm to the proprietress, Mrs. A. H. McCarthy, and slight damage to the wallpaper when it slipped on a polished floor in the hall, states a Hastings correspondent. The animal was being driven out of the backyard of the hotel with dogs, and on being cornered it rushed through the back door of the building in order to escape its tormentors. It first encountered trouble when it stood on the mats on the highly-polished floor in the hall. A mat slipped and threw the bull heavily against a bedroom wall, to the consternation of Mr. McCarthy, who was in the bedroom. It was at this stage that Mrs. McCarthy met the intruder. She made a hasty retreat to another bedroom, from which she watched the unwelcome visitor enter a bathroom. In the meantime several Maoris had followed the bull into the building, but none appeared very much inclined to go into the bathroom to discuss the situation with the bull, in spite of the fact that he was standing quietly with his head over a hand basin peering out through the bathroom window. After a hurried conference the Maoris decided to shift the attack to the bathroom window, but sticks and abuse hurled through this aperture failed to have any effect. "I was afraid considerable damage would be done before it was all over," said Mrs. McCarthy, when telling of the escapade, "but fortunately a young Maori, who appeared to be devoid of nerves, solved the problem by walking into the bathroom. He twisted the bull's tail to such purpose that the animal was glad to make a quick retreat into the hall • once again, and finally dashed for open spaces."
