TRENTHAM RACES

THE SUMMER MEETING

GUSTY ANNIVERSARY DAY

LARGE ATTENDANCE

(By "Ribbonwood.")

After ringing quite' a number of further changes, the weather decided on sunshine and wind for the continuation of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Trentham today. As the Anniversary Day holiday, it was the big day for the public, and all channels of transport were busy the morning long moving the exceptionally large crowd that was directing its way to Trentham. It was the best attendance at a Wellington' Meeting for many years. Though some light .showers of rain fell last evening, they- were not sufficient more than to dampen the surface of things, and with the drying winds of the last two days the track had lost the deadness that characterised the opening day's going. The usual comprehensive facilities catered for the needs of the crowd. The betting was under the win-and-place system with the new Julius tolalisator, which was closing promptly to schedule, and running descriptions of the racing were broadcast on the course. Results and notes on the running to time, of going to press are;— MUNGAROA HIGHWEIGHT HANDI- J CAP, £300; second horse £70 and third £35 from the stake; li miles. I—l—Messrs. C. Watkins's and E. W. Taumau led all the way to the straight in the Mungaroa Highweight Handicap, but he then hung out badly, allowing several horses to come up on the inside of him. This cost him three or four lengths, but he came along strongly again at the finish over Ihe last hundred yards to beat Le Grand by a good length, with Convivial less than, a neck away third. Taumau was attended in the early stages by Otaki, Convivial, Windward, Charade, and Lord Hereford, and at the straight entrance Lady Wessex had run up into second place, with Convivial, Windward, Charade, Trevelyn Hold, and Le Grand next. Lady Wessex was a close fourth, then Windward, Trevelyn Hold, and Soho, who was last most of the way. The place pool on this event was nearly double that 'on the win machine. Time, 2min 12Jsec.

"While the fields for the minor races oil the concluding day of the Thames Jockey Club's Meeting tomorrow %re very good, it is very probable that the open events will produce only modestsized fields. Practically all the participants are engaged in the President's Handicap tomorrow and it is obvious there is not much between them. The track is hard and fast, but the weather is still rather unsettled. Win-j and-place betting will be in operation. Form horses for tomorrow are:— 12.0: Kopu Handicap.—Madelon, Orefield. and Bryce Street. 12.45: Hikutaia Hurdles.—Calcutta, Lady Ruler, and Sandrift. 1.30: Parawai Handicap.—Mungacre. and Boughal. 2.15: Thames Hack Cup.—Gay Streak, Sunny Downs, and Vera Acre. 3.0: President's Handicap.—Gay Broney and Miss Lu. 3.45: Turua Stakes. —Madelon, Susan, and Black Musk. 4.30: County Handicap.—Kilberis, Maungakaha, and Lagoon. 5.15: Farewell Handicap.—High Star, Palustrc. and Surella.
