EASY WIN BY DAVOLO

OAMARU, January 2. The Oamaru Jockey Club's New Year Meeting was held today under perfect weather conditions. There was a record attendance, and the totalisator turnover was the largest since 1930, being £12,223 for the win-and-place machine, compared with £9783 10s last year, when the 75-25 totalisator was in operation, an increase of £2439 10s. The track was in splendid order and fast after the recent rains. Great Star and Gaysome were first to break the line from Queen of Song. Six furlongs from home Gaysome showed clear from Queen of Song and Great Star, with Southdown moving up to follow the first two into the straight. Gaysome and Queen of Song were fighting it out when Davolo appeared on the scene, and going to the fron* at the half-distance, won easily by a length and a half from Queen of Song, who was half a head in front of Gaysome.
