TROTTING

CLOUDY RANGE

CANTERBURY PARK TROTS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

January 2. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club brought its meeting to a close at Addington today in bright sunshine and with the track in great order. There was a large attendance to see some very good, racing. The totalisator handled £32,969 10s against £22,301 10s, a total of £63,527 10s against £48,368, an increase of £15.159 10s. Esther and • Great Linnet broke in the first furlong of the Progressive Handicap, leaving Royal Parrish to lead Axiom, Chudleigh, and Survivor. After six furlongs Axiom drew out from Royal; Parrish, whom he beat by six lengths. Survivor was in second place at the home turn, but broke. Indolent, Esther, and Parrish Chimes were next. The winner was at one time in the stable of the late W. J. Tomkinson, who trained him as a pacer. He shapes now like making a good trotter. As the result of an inquiry, Survivor was disqualified for galloping, third place going to Indolent, who also made a few mistakes. Guymond broke at the start of the Telegraph Handicap. On Parade was soon in charge, Royal Comrade and Fairhaven heading the others after two furlongs. Royal Comrade took charge half a mile from home. On Parade, Happy Knight, and Worthy King being next. Royal Comrade held his place, winning easily by a length, and Happy Knight beat the tiring On Parade by nearly a length for second. Golden Cross was fourth. The first and second horses are trained by Nelson Price, a New Brighton trainer, who is always hard to beat in saddle races. SOMETHING IN HAND. Willow Wave was slow to begin in the Mason Handicap. Queen Author led out from Emilius Way, with Gold Tinge, Llewellyn's Pride, and War Paint next. War Buoy and Gunfire joined in after half a mile. A little further on Cloudy Range and Tempest also made their appearance. Gold Tinge dropped back before reaching the mile post, but the only other change starting the last lap was that Llewellyn's Pride joined Queen Author in the lead. Cloudy Range started a fast run half a mile from home, taking' the lead a furlong further on, where Graham Direct and Blue Mountain were moving up. Cloudy Range led War Buoy to the straight, the former going on to win by a length. Graham Direct finished strongly, a length away, beating Blue Mountain by half a length while Tempest dashed up to cut War Buoy out of fourth place. It was a fine race all the way.

Agility and Chateau were the early leaders in the Middleton Handicap, with Reno, Aide de Camp, Southern Chief, Revlena, and Fay Rey always handy. Chateau retired half a mile from home, where Southern Chief joined Agility in the lead, and Wee Wrack moved up. Aide de Camp shot to the front when the straight was reached, and won easily from Wee Wrack, who beat Fay Rey by two lengths. Southern Chief, Agility, and Reylena were next. The winner's performance was impressive.

Lady Sonoma broke early in the Hornby Handicap, leaving Raclaim in charge, but King's Guard headed her after three furlongs, where Amonos, Don Chenault, and Mataunga were handy. Garner also joined in with a round to go, being in fourth place half a mile from home. There was no change to the straight, where Raclaim shot to the front and won easily. Garner took second place, stalling off Amonos by a neck. Ganton finished fast to be fourth. Raclaim won so impressively that she should go on to better class. BRILLIANT TOP-OFF. Gamble registered an exceptional effort to win the Selwyn Handicap. He was first away but was steadied. Recess taking charge from Guy Junior, Llewellyn's Pride, Gunfire, and Grace McElwyn. After half a mile Guy Junior, Grace McElwyn, and Raydus headed the bunch, Gamble being a long way back, in eleventh place, while Tempest had run up to fifth. There was not much change at the home turn, save that Gamble was going up. Raydus took the lead in the straight but Gamble flew up on the outside, winning by half a length, with George Rey half a length back, beating Rollo by a head, while Tempest was half a length further away. It was a fine race, with a brilliant performance by the winner to top it off.

Gaillard won the Prebbleton Handicap in brilliant style. He and U. Scott began slowly, Esplendor leading for hall a mile. Gaillard then took third place, but U. Scott still was last with half the journey gone. He moved up fast along the back, where Navy Blue also made a move. Gaillard was showing the way to U. Scott and Navy Blue three furlongs from home, and they cleared out from the field. Navy Blue followed Gaillard to the straight, but Gaillard won easily. Navy Blue hanging on to beat U. Scott by half a length. Play On was fourth. Gaillard is a grea£ pacer, but unfortunately he is not sound. U. Scott was set a severe task in having to come from the tail of the field in the last half-mile.

There was a good contest, with a fine finish, for the Final Handicap. Nobleman set the pace from Plain Pearl and Chechahco, and after two furlongs Subsidy was at the head of the others. Half a mile from home Plain Pearl joined Nobleman in the lead, with Subsidy and Chechahco still heading a bunch. Subsidy ran up to the two leaders racing round the final turn, where Gallant Knight started a run. In a good finish Gallant Knight came home with a brilliant run to beat Subsidy by half a length, with Nobleman half a length away. Plain Pearl was fourth. The favourite, Southern Smile, was going well at the entrance to the

straight, but did not run on. This was the second win for Gallant Knight during the holidays, as he was successful at Ashburton on Boxing Day.
