TWOFOLD MISSION

VICTORIAN OFFICIALS PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT Although the main reason for their visit to New Zealand is to represent the Victorian Government at the congress of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, at Auckland, the Hon. H. J. Hyland and Mr. H. A. Mullett, arrivals by the Awatea today, are also making a tour of the Dominion with a view to studying agricultural developments with particular reference to the dairying and pastoral pursuits. Mr. Hyland is Assistant Minister of Agriculture and secretary to the Victorian Cabinet, and Mr. Mullett, who is accompanied by his wife, is Director of Agriculture in Victoria.

Mr. Mullett said they would be making a report to the Victorian Government on various aspects of agricultural development in New Zealand, notably in regard to the dairying and pastoral industries. Victoria was particularly interested in the pastoral development in New Zealand. "We realise that we can gain from the experience accumulated in New Zealand just as New Zealanders can gain from the experience built up in Victoria," said Mr. Hyland. Mr. Hyland said there was a fair amount of seed coming from New Zealand and they desired to study the New Zealand system of seed certification. In Victoria seeds were also certified, but the system had not been in operation as long as it had in New Zealand. It I was realised that proper certificatio.i was important; it was essential that the farmer should have delivered to him the seed he paid for. "We desire to check up"on the New Zealand system, said Mr. Hyland, "and see whether we can improve our system." Mr. Hyland said that he and Mr. Mullett would be in New Zealand long enough to have a good look round, and he made it plain that it is their hope that they will return to Victoria with some valuable information.
