BOWLING

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

TOURNAMENT OPENED

PLAY IN SINGLES

Nearly 700 bowlers gathered in Wel.ington this morning for the opening )f the New Zealand Bowling Associa;ion's twenty-fourth annual championship tournament, which will occupy all local greens until about the middle of Ihe month. Play began at 9 o'clock with the first round of the singles, m which there are thirty-eight sections and 280 players, and four rounds will be played today. The fine weather during the weekend left all greens in good order, and the sunshine early today gave them a keen edge, although the sky was overcast when the games commenced. The air was warm, and if the rain keeps off the playing surfaces should remain uniform. . The players engaged on outlying greens were ready to start at 9 o clock, and consequently only those engaged on the Wellington greens, officials, and some visitors were present when the tournament was declared open by the president of the N.Z.8.A., the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C. The bowlers taking part in the tourney, said Mr. Perry, had come from all parts of New Zealand, and he welcomed them and wished them a happy tournament and a very happy and prosperous New Year; "The game is becoming more important every year," he added. 'More players are taking part, more members of the fair sex appear on the greens, and more young men are turning to bowls. ' The game is also receiving more attention from the general public. It is becoming more representative and I believe the time will come when there will be really representative international contests, in which New Zealand will take part. The players selected for such contests should be selected because of their ability as bowlers." As far as the tournament was concerned, said Mr. Perry, the first thing the bowlers wanted was good weathei, but Jupiter Pluvius was very noncommittal. However even if they were not favoured with g° od throughout the tournament, he believed that the bowlers would make the best of the conditions and enjoy them selves. He thanked the umpiies for Lhe work they were going to do, ana expressed the hope that. the players would accept the decisions of toe umpires in the best of spints. have with us some past champions he said, "some present champions, and, I have no doubt, some future champions. May the greens play well and may you.all have an enjoyable tourna m Headquarters for the t?»rnament are at the Wellington Bowling Club s pavifion, and results Srppns being used will be transmiueu there at the conclusion of each rQund and posted on a score board for the information of bowlers.
