HOPE ABANDONED

THE POPE'S RECOVERY

LEG STILL GIVING TROUBLE A RESTFUL NIGHT (United Treiw Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (.Received January 2, 11 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, January I. A well-informed Vatican authority disclosed that all hopes of the Pope's recovery have been abandoned. He said that the illness is slowly pursuing its fatal course. The Pope had a restful night, and heard Midnight Mass in an adjoining room. His physician ordered a special armchair, in which his Holiness was able to move about with his troubled leg extended. A cablegram published last Thursday stated that, while semi-officially admitting that the Pope was no worse, even Vatican circles felt that the end could not be far off. In addition to other ailments, it was feared that he had developed thrombosis, namely, blood clots, in the left leg. Subsequently it was reported that the Pope's condition had appreciably improved. The clot had dispersed and the pain had diminished. The Vatican Press service stated that the danger of complications had greatly decreased.
