DUNGARVAN THE LION-HEARTED

MARTON OPENS IN A ; THUNDERSTORM I (By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") MARTON, January 1. The Marton Jockey Club's Summer Meeting opened today in humid weather and heavy rain, with thunder and lightning before the third race, and continuing intermittently for the rest of the day. The course was in fine order, but it. was cutting up towards the finish. The attendance was good, and the totalisator handled £14,906 10s, as compared with £13,331 10s last New Year's Day, an increase of £1575. [ TWO-HORSE RACE. Missal and In the Dark were never ! going' well enough in the Maiden Plate ' to return dividends, and there were ! only two in it when heads were turned ; for home. Tractile, Golden Enterprise, 1 and In the Dark were first to show out ' after an even start, but Golden Enter--1 prise soon went to the front. Golden i Enterprise turned for home with Tracl tile in close attendance, and they were well clear of Missal and In the Dark. ■ Tractile then ran past Golden Enter- ; prise and won easily by a couple of . lengths. Missal was third six lengths i further back, and Gay Ruby and Rci serve Bank were next. A MILD SURPRISE. En Vidette and Gainsay carried most • money in the Ladies' Bracelet, but , Gainsay broke down after going a furlong and was pulled up. The early . leader was Gold Nymph, from Otaki and En Vidette. Otaki moved forward ; going' down the back stretch, and he was in second place behind En Vidette at the far turn. En Vidette led Otaki into the straight, and Lilbert and First Spec were nearest of the others. OtakJ headed En Vidette at the distance, and went on to win by the best part of a length from En Vidette. Lilbert was third five lengths away third, and Gold Nymph was fourth. PANGO BEATS BLUE TIGER. Pango and the Waikato mare Sandrift were the favourites for the hurdles, and Pango had no difficulty in carrying his backers through. He was never under pressure, and he won comfortably from Blue Tiger and Lord Hereford. Sandrift nearly came down at the first fence, but Gilmer, the jockey, made a wonderful recovery. ALLSPICE IN JUVENILE. Allspice, winner of two races at Awapuni. and Dawning Light were selected as the likely ones for the Juvenile Handicap, and they finished first and second. The early order was Allspice, from Scarf Dance, Dawning Light, Laggard, and Mazzini, and these positions were maintained into the straight where Dawning Light, rather far away, set out on the task of catching Allspice. Dawning Light made up some of the ground, but Allspice finished very solidly, and she was still half a head to the good at the post. Old Surrey was two lengths away third, and The Bigot was fourth. GREAT EFFORT BY DUNGARVAN. Heavy rain was falling when the field was sent on its journey in the Cup. Limbohm was last to leave the mark, being squeezed out. Sanguine King Soon ran to the front, leading from Grand Jury, Dungarvan, Siegmund, and Spiral. At the six furlongs Sanguine King drew away to a fivelength leadi Dungarvan was in second place, followed by Grand Jury, Arctic King, Spiral, and Siegmund. L. A. Pine, on Dungarvan, took care not to let Sanguine King get too far away, and he closed the gap crossing the top and was actually first to turn for home with Sanguine King, Arctic King, and Spiral next. Spiral coming through on the fence. Dungarvan held a commanding lead at the distance, but Spiral threw out a determined challenge, and Dungarvan was doing his best at the finish to win by a neck. Arctic King was two lengths away third, and Grand Jury was fourth, followed by Hunting Queen, Sanguine King; and Tout le Monde. LAUGHING LASS'S SPRINT. Owing to the heavy rain before the Railway Handicap the preliminaries were cut out. Royal Routine and Invoice were first to show out. Mother Superior joined them after a furlong, but .she dropped back again, and the order into the straight was Invoice, from Royal Routine, with Laughing Lass and Mother Superior next. Invoice was still in command at the distance, but Laughing Lass had his measure, j and she ran past him and won well by a length. Invoice was over a length in front of Royal Routine, and Mother Superior was fourth. EASY FOR OUTSIDER. War Lap was the outsider in the New Year Hack, a five-horse race, but i he slipped the field three furlongs from home and won as he liked by eight lengths from Cloudy Bay, the only one to make a challenge. Lifeguard soon had charge in the ' concluding event, and he led to the [ straight followed by Golden Chest and ] Windward. He drew away and won : easily by six lengths from Laggard, : who came from the back to beat Windward for second. Windward was two . lengths away from Laggard, and ; Golden Chest was fourth. : RESULTS IN DETAIL. i Maiden Plate, £100: 6 furlongs.—4 ' Tractile. 8.7 (Pine). 1; 3 Golden Enter- ' prise. 8.7 (France), 2; 1 Missal, 8.7 - (Peck). 3.
