ANOTHER RICCARTON WIN

A fortunate run through along the inner in the straight brought victory to the southerner Joyous in the Wharekaka Hack Handicap. The mare was well back in most of the running and she had only one horse behind her burning for home, but Alunga, the leader, then stopped quickly and took mosl of the others off the fence when drifting, which gave Joyous a clear passage by the shortest route to the judgs. Joyous had not raced previously during the holidays, but she was a winr.er at Washdyke in the spring and later ran some good races at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. She is a five-year-old brown daughter of Chief Ruler from the Solferino—Stardancer mare Limelight, a Great Auti.mn and C.J.C. Metropolitan winner, and dam also of Stately and Ilias; and she carries the colours of her breeder, Mr. L. W. Storry, for whom she is being trained*by D. J. O'Connor at Riccarton. Export was going better at the end than the winner only three parts of a length away, and as he had to come round the field from nearly as far back at the straight entrance his effort was a good one. Rustem, fourth to enter the home stretch, was at the head of the others, but a couple of lengths back.

j The favourite. Black Thread, though fourth, was a shade disappointing, as he was well placed in third berth in the running nearly all the way, Royjil Minstrel was second most of the trip and should improve before long on his. fifth. Youssipof ran quite a fair race; but Alunga was a big disappointment, for he had no fight whalever in him after setting the pace to the straight.

WHEN LUCK IS OUT There were eleven acceptors and only three starters in the Wardell Handicap. It was most disappointing to see such poor response for a £250 prize. Full Throttle set his own pace and was an easy winner by three lengths. A turn his way was well due. As he also succeeded on the first day at Awapimi, he has now won his last, two races, his first victories in the colours of his present owner, Mr. H. Fredrickson.

The favourite was Boomerang, who was half as well backed again as the winner. Boomerang and Vinco ran. up alongside Full Throttle at the halfmile peg, but in the straight Full Throttle accelerated away from them. Vine o appeared if anything to have the first call over Boomerang, but the judge dead-heated the stablemates. Luck was so much against T. R. Geo:-ge on the day that he could not add a point to his season's tally even with two of the three starters in a race from his stable.
