TENNIS TOURNEY
PLAY AT TIMARU SWGLES QUARTER-FWALS (By Telegraph—Press Association.! TIMARU, This Day. For the fourth day of the New Zealand lawn tennis championships the weather is fine and warm but the sky is overcast. The courts are still slightly on the heavy side but are playing well. The fact that the quarter-finals of the men's and women's singles were played drew a large crowd, the stands being full at an early hour. The first game completed was between Misses Nicholls and M. Beverley, the former winning 6-4, 6-2. The .game was fought at long range with Miss Beverley putting plenty of power into her shots, but Miss Nicholls was in her best form and made brilliant returns, many of which kept low and went through for winners. Miss N. Beverley (Waikato), second on the New Zealand ladder, had no trouble in defeating Miss J. Ramsay (Auckland). Miss T. Poole also entered the semifinals by disposing of Miss M. Howe (Wellington) after a hard fight in the second set. Results:— MEN'S SINGLES. Quarter-nnals.j Angas beat E. A. Roussell, 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. ! D. C. Coombe beat J. C. MIXED DOUBLES. First Round. J. W. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley beat G. C. Reid and Miss D. Patchett, 6-1, 8-6. Second Round. C. Penfold and Miss M. Wake beat R. G. Pattinson and Miss S.
