THE P.E.N
Members of the New Zealand centre of the P.E.N. met at Dr. G. H. Scholefield's residence at Highland Park last week to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Johannes C. Andersen after their return from the annual P.E.N. congress at Buenos Aires.
Mr. Andersen gave/a most interesting account of his visit to the Argentine and the countries he touched en route. He met many interesting personalities, including Mr.'H. G. Wells. He produced unique records of his travels, including a folder containing Press cuttings, photographs,. programmes, and invitations associated with the congress, which was attended by delegates from nearly' sixty countries. Travelling to Buenos Aires via England with P.B.N. delegates, Mr. Andersen compiled an interesting record of the opinions on art and literature of leading writers. These comments were supplemented with observations by Mr. Andersen on the writers who contributed to his symposium. Mr. Andersen spoke of the remarkable influence of the P.E.N. in the world of literature and art. It is certainly one of the outstanding organisations, in the world today. Mr. Andersen was thanked for his address. Those present spent a most enjoyable evening.
