"THE ROAD TO GLORY."
Plaza Theatre on Friday,
"The play's the thing," but players are important too, according to Darryl F. Zanuck, head of the Twentieth Cen-tury-Fox studios. Great themes, to Zanuck, are vitally more important than casting a famous star in an ordinary picture. Yet, by the' same token, Zanuck has astonished Hollywood with the prodigality with which he has cast groups of stars together in a single film. However, regardless of the boxoffice appeal of the players, it is their particular talents that Zanuck considers —and the film story is always more essential than the actors who portray it. "The Road to Glory," Zanuck's latest Twentieth Century-Fox production, coming on Friday to the Plaza Theatre, is a typical instance of his method in casting. Three famous stars, any one capable of "carrying" an ordinary film alone, are featured in the leading roles. The trio is composed of Fredric March. Warner Baxter, and Lionel Barrymore—a potent array that in itself practically assures a film of financial success. Yet Zanuck did not cast these three stars together for that reason but, rather, because he felt that they alone, of all the actors in Hollywood, could successfully play the parts. Evidence of this is that he put a virtual unknown, June Lang.i in the leading feminine role because he felt that she was ideal.
