PRICE OF MILK

(To the Editor.) ' Sir,—While reading the "Evening Post" on Saturday evening I was sur-1 prised to see a notice to the effect .that on and after December 1 the Hutt Valley Milk Venders' Association would charge. s£-d per quart for milk. Does this not seem strange at this time of the year when there is plenty of feed for the cows and the cows are in full milk? Had this taken

place in winter when hay and chaff or bran has to be purchased I could understand it. A couple of years ago milk could be procured at 4d per | quart. As milk is an essential food, especially where young children are concerned, this increase is going to have a detrimental effect. It means the child will be deprived of its fair allowance per day, as the breadwinner will be compelled to reduce his quantity. We have been told that children should have at least one pint each per day. Now here is a golden opportunity for the Labour Government to step in and fix the- price in fairness to everybody. If that cannot be done the next best thing is a State milk farm, where, say, 1000 unemployed could be found useful work. It'has been said from time to time- that there are thousands of acres of land which could be turned into profit by dairying. Why not get to work straight away and do something.—l am, etc., CONSUMER.
