JUNIOR RED CROSS
GOOD SOCIAL SERVICE
"This year the Junior Red Cross at j Wellington Girls' College has been very active under Carol Ayers as; | president," states the secretary. "Dur- | ing the year several weeks have been set aside for the collection of certain goods. A 'milk token trail' held in the first term, brought in 177 pint milk tokens, and an -egg week' an offering of 447 eggs. "In the first term a 'harvest festival' was held, with the result that a large quantity of fruit, vegetables, and groceries was sent to the Red Cross for distribution. As we had quite a large balance at the bank we decided, in tha winter term, to spend £5 of it; £2 was spent on little woollen undergarments for children and twelve families received a five-shilling parcel of groceries. j "In response to an appeal from the Red Cross on behalf of the Maoris of Hawke's Bay, two large parcels of clothing were sent to a Native school there. A few weeks ago we received an appeal on behalf of the lepers of Makogai, and we took great pleasure in packing a large crate with toys, dolls, games, beads, books, all kinds of sewing materials, together with a huge box of gramophone records for both children and adults. "We have planned a concert to •be held before the holidays to help to
-provide Christmas dinners for the poor. t "Our portfolio is completed for the" secondary schools' competition. Some time ago we received a portfolio from a school in Switzerland in return for one sent by us last year.' A letter has been sent thanking them for their interesting gift. Throughout the year we have been guided by the ideal of 'service,' and'helping others has been our pleasure." In the annual portfolio competition for secondary schools throughout the Dominion, ' and conducted by headquarters of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, the second prize was awarded to the Wellington Girls' College.
