GROWING MOVEMENT
CLERICAL WORKERS' UNIONS
!. Good progress is being made with | the formation of clerical workers' ' unions in other parts of the Dominion, and on the initiative of the Wellington Union a Dominion conference is being called with the object of forming a i national organisation. This decision I was reached at a meeting of the Wellington clerical workers last night. Mr. F. P. Walsh, the president, was in the chair. The secretary, Mr. W. N. Pharazyn, reported that the membership of the union was now over 1000, and he hoped that the terms of the award would be announced in a week or two. The chairman stated that clerical workers' unions were now in force in Auckland, New Plymouth, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill. The Wellington Union was the furtherest advanced in award proceedings, and as the first award would set the standard for the whole country, it was essential that all clerical workers should work in*»the closest cooperation.
COUNTRY ENROLMENTS
The Wellington Clerical Workers' Union has now enrolled some 500 members in the country districts, and at a conference at Palmerston North on Saturday the first steps will be taken towards the obtaining of an award for country districts. The conference will be asked to agree formally to ask the employers to meet representatives of the workers in conciliation council and it is hoped that the meeting will be arranged for the middle of January. If a,n agreement is not reached in the conciliation proceedings an application will be made to have the case heard at the first sitting of the Arbitration Court in Wellington in the New Year. j The conference will include delegates from Masterton, Wanganui, Hastings, and Napier, as well as Palmerston North.
