RISING'IMPORTS
TEN MONTHS' BUSINESS
The Customs returns for overseas trade for October last show a seasonal i excess of imports over exports for the month. The returns—all shown in New Zealand currency—for this year's full ten months' trading, when compared with those of last year, show an excess of £12,851,000 in the value, of exports over imports, but the value of exports is £1,100,000 more than for the corresponding period of 1935, when the excess of exports over imports was £8,680,000; but the balance to the credit of the Dominion as represented by excess of exports over imports for the 1934 period amounted to £16,114.000. The imports show a marked tendency to rise. The position is disclosed in the following table: — Exports. Specie exported during j the ten months in review was £45,245; imported, £18,627. The exports for the month of October 1936, were of the value of £2,567,000, and imports £3,947,000, leaving a debit balance against the Dominion of £1,380,000.
